Where as in Europe and in the USA and the various designs of round web tension sensors dominate, is the picture in Asia and with the dominating Japanese technology very different with the primary use of pillow block sensors especially in the converting area.
As always in technical areas both designs of the various round forms and pillow blocks have their own advantages and disadvantages. The discussion centers mostly on the various mounting styles. The round force measurement sensors have their advantages in case of machined vertical machine frames because they can be directly flanged to them. If these machined frames are not present the round sensors are generally fastened to bearing blocks mounted on rack frames. Because of the lack of small pillow block sensors generally not available in the West this is a somewhat expensive solution.
Following suggestions of Asian customers, the HAEHNE Company has developed new pillow block sensors for small forces primarily for the converting area. This aluminum design is not only very lightweight but also very cost-efficient. However, the HAEHNE Company did not select the predominant displacement design based on the LVDT principle (linear variable differential transformer) but instead chose the strain gauge design because of the generally greater stiffness. Experience in the field with high - speed applications as shown the LVDT principle in conjunction with resonances can result in oscillations and vibrations - tuning fork effect.
The new pillow block sensors are available for vertical and horizontal applications and cover the force range of 100 to 500 N.
